Spinal and Postural Problems
The spinal column has 3 natural curves in the cervical, thoracic and lumbar regions. Parallel to the spine are the deep spinal muscles that work automatically to hold the spine upright and to counter the negative effects of gravity. Postural awareness doesn’t happen often but when we think about our posture we tend to instinctively and suddenly stand or sit up straighter.
Postural awareness can be channelled into exercises that make you more aware of your spinal alignment. The deep spinal muscles can be strengthened just as any muscle can be strengthened but they require unique exercises that target the correct muscles. Every individual has their own reason for poor spinal alignment. It could arise as a result of structural scoliosis, from a spinal fracture or just from habitual patterns of movement. Postural or antigravity muscles are those that support and align the spine. They hold us erect against the downward pull of gravity. Unfortunately, in some of us, these muscles are poorly conditioned and overtaxed. This results from old injuries, muscle imbalances and faulty movement patterns that have developed over time.
Physiotherapists are uniquely trained in assessing spinal alignment and prescribing appropriate exercises. At Atrium Physiotherapy, we have the BONEFIT exercise protocol designed to strengthen the spine and stretch tight muscles. Easy home exercises done regularly with simple pieces of equipment can be surprisingly effective. In just a short period of time, improvement can be felt and seen. Don’t underestimate the value to your appearance. Body carriage says a great deal about you and certainly contributes to attractiveness, confidence and overall image.
It has been said that the best anti-aging strategy is good posture.
