Meniscal tears and ACL tears are fairly common knee injuries in sports that involve twisting and collision with opponents. Contact sports such as rugby, football, hockey and lacrosse can result in partial or complete tears. Treatment of these tears depends on the amount of damage, the age of the athlete, the level of sporting activity and the level of function. If there is only a partial tear and knee stability is intact, then conservative treatment with physiotherapy and knee bracing is advocated.

When athletes are involved in high levels of sport and their knee is unstable, ACL reconstruction surgery is the better way to restore function and reduce the risk of developing arthritis in the future.

Immediately after surgery, the hospital health care team monitors the initial recovery. The nursing team monitors vital signs for a safe and comfortable recovery. The hospital physiotherapists and the out-patient physiotherapists are a team.   The core components of the in-hospital therapy program include progressive movement exercises and muscle recruitment. Before discharge, a treatment plan is formulated and includes information on home care and exercises.

Monitoring out-patient progress is essential and the physiotherapists at Atrium Physiotherapy safely guide you through a specific post-operative recovery program designed in conjunction with the surgeon’s recommendations. We will have a surgeon specific protocol to therapy. Physiotherapy will make you stronger in so many ways, both in strength and in function.

At Atrium Physiotherapy we answer your questions and we provide support. When to return to work? When to take on a sport or new activity? How to deal with intermittent pain? What to do and what to avoid? All these questions and more are what our physiotherapists are well qualified to answer. A new treatment plan will be designed as your circumstances change. Atrium Physiotherapy will help you achieve peak performance.
