Chronic Arthritic & Pains

Arthritis is a common chronic and painful condition affecting the joints. Certain joints are inflamed and become painful and swollen. Therapeutic pain relieving modalities and manual therapy techniques are used at Atrium Physiotherapy.

Many chronic pains are more due to lack of fitness than to an illness. When our bodies are unable to perform the tasks we demand of them, painful accidents occur. When we perform repetitive movement patterns throughout the day we submit our muscles to overuse. Injury and pain result. Research shows that soft tissues heal better with movement, unlike in the past when you were sent to bed. Now an active approach is encouraged, but it’s not as easy as doing just any exercise. For best results, exercises need to be specific to each individual and specific to each condition. You will control chronic pain better when doing exercises prescribed by a physiotherapist..

Your physiotherapist will teach stretching, mobilizing and strengthening exercise and observe your progress. Many different exercises are needed and not one exercise is better than the rest. There is no magical exercise that provides a short cut.

The practice of “no pain, no gain” may only strain the injured area further. Physiotherapists do not believe in it! Forget attempting to compete with someone else. No two people are alike, nor are they able to exercise the same way. Your own body is the best guide, listen to it.
